My little tradition is to wear white on the day of my wedding anniversary. It doesn't have to be a fancy outfit, but something has to be white on the outfit. It's mostly a nod to myself, I don't talk about it to others and I'd be surprised if my husband every noticed. It's just nice to have a tradition for myself only.
I love this! For many years now, on the first chilly autumn Saturday morning of the year, I've gotten a hot PSL and driven around listening to the whole Red (now Taylor's Version) album. I also have a perfume I spritz on every Sunday to make that day special in a new way since I walked away from a high-control religion a few years ago. I want to make more of these!
My wife and I celebrate a few traditions that are beloved: Carol Aird Steak Night (we go to a nice steak dinner at this classy modern "supper club" where they have a jazz trio and then we come home and watch "Carol." We also celebrate "Amy's Only Pool Day" on the first warm weekend of the year, and we go to our local gourmet grocery store and get sandwiches and snacks and spend the whole day enjoying the pool for the first day of the season. We also typically watch "Love, Actually" on the day we decorate our Christmas tree.
I loved the first essay on romanticizing the everyday, and this is such a perfect companion! Some of my favorite traditions:
- My partner and I get unlimited sushi every Valentine's Day and do a fancy dinner the week before or after — we avoid the crowds and typically overwrought V-Day-specific menus, and there's something kinda fun & subversive about gorging yourself on a day everyone associates with romance and sex, lol.
- Every Christmas, I give everyone an ornament that's emblematic of their year.
- Not as date-specific, but it's an unspoken tradition to reuse gift bags/wrappings/etc. with my partner's family, so we're always passing bags and such back and forth... surprisingly charming (and cheaper than always buying new ones!)
I agree with you about the present-wrapping night! I order most of the presents directly to my parents’ house, so when I get there a few days before Christmas I hole up in my room with the wrapping supplies and a glass of wine
I hail from and married into families of Halloween non-enthusiasts. The year my husband and I got married, we decided to host a Halloween bash and make everyone dress up and come party with us. It’s become an annual favorite (6 years running) and the costumes get better and better each year! The non-enthusiasts have changed their tune, and we all love Halloween now and look forward to getting our families together.
I start watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy on New Year's Day. I don't get through all of it in one day, but I at least get it started and finish the trilogy through the whole week.
Love this thoughtful essay and what a fun prompt this could be in my journal? My fiance and I started a tradition of getting ice cream before every first day of school (I'm a teacher). We also open up presents throughout the days leading up to Christmas. I like to splurge on an advent calendar that helps me get through the stressful days that are teaching before break!
Love this essay. Some of my favorite traditions include watching all of the Treehouse of Horror Simpson's episodes on Halloween, eating Coney Dogs on Christmas Eve, taking my dog on the muddiest walk possible right before bath time, and picking out special snacks to bring on the plane before a vacation.
My dad used to drive us down 5th avenue to look at the holiday windows on Christmas Day! We’d get some Honey Roasted Nuts on the way home and it was the sweetest memory.
We had more "traditions" when our children were little...overnight in Chicago looking at the lights and dinner out at a fun restaurant, Breakfast Casserole with mimosas Xmas morning (the boys had grape juice in the champagne glasses), spending Xmas morning at home together before visiting family in the afternoon (which was challenging as they were first grandchildren), cutting down our Xmas tree.

I adore this. Thank you for sharing.
Oh I love this! What a wonderful private tradition that I will be stealing immediately!

Nothing quite as glorious as driving around scream-singing Taylor Swift... especially Red. Love this.

I've always wanted an ornament tradition!!! All of these are so lovely.

A perfect night (and excuse for some alone time)!

This is my dream party invite tbh.

That's so cozy! What a great idea.

I need to start getting into advent calendars! There are so many amazing ones out there now. Do you have a fave you've bought in recent years?
