Hi, friends. It’s been a while since I brought you along for a week in the life, so here we are. It always feels a bit presumptuous to assume people want to know what I made for dinner and what I wore to work from home, but I love seeing these granular portraits of other people’s days. So, without further ado, here’s my week:
Psst: If you’re a paid subscriber, the audio version of this post is more like a casual podcast episode, with my extended thoughts on The Great Pottery Throw Down, writing about body image in the age of Ozempic, my first time watching Love Island, detailed book reviews, and more…
Friday

Last week had multiple days with temperatures that stretched into the triple digits, but Friday was finally cool enough that we opened most of the doors and windows to start the day. The house needed to breathe and frankly, so did I. I kicked off the morning reading and drinking coffee, as usual. Jake picked up a copy of The Listeners by Maggie Seifvater at Rough Draft a couple weeks ago, and I had been seeing it everywhere, so I cracked it open before he could get to it. A week later, I’m about 150 pages into it and enjoying it, though I find myself reading at a bit of a slower pace than usual.
I popped on Facebook at some point and saw the official poster for the Project Hail Mary movie, then promptly screenshotted and sent it to all the people in my life who are fellow PHM fanatics (yes, that includes the Bad on Paper Geneva group). I can’t tell you how excited I am for this movie. I am deeply considering planning a mini retreat around the release — renting a private theater, etc. Is this… insane? Maybe. But listen, this is my ACOTAR. This is my Fourth Wing. Except instead of a hot, brooding male love interest at the center of my obsession it is… a rock/spider-like alien.

Because of the heat, I had been very bad about meal planning and cooking, so we had pretty much nothing in the house beyond some sad bananas. We made a quick trip to Bartlett House for breakfast/brunch. I got a ham and cheese croissant and a matcha latte with coconut milk and blueberry jam, which was an unusual choice for me, but the current matcha-obsession has entered my pysche, I guess. And this drink was very good!
Later, I wrote about 800 words in my current WIP (first draft of book 3, fingers crossed) and paid some bills. I got the second quarter of my advance for Little One on this day, so I was very happy. I rounded out the afternoon with some work on the retreat I’m launching soon (stay tuned!) and then went on a very long walk.

After, I showered and changed into the same outfit I had worn the day before (it was clean, OK?) before heading into town for an event at my local bookstore. It was a lovely conversation between Helen Philips (author of Hum) and Paul Yoon. I got a glass of rose and picked up Helen and Paul’s books, as well as a copy of Tilt by Emma Pattee, which I’ve been wanting to read. Jake read at a bar nearby while I went to the event (he doesn’t like book events unless he’s read the book… can’t relate!!) and then we met afterwards and walked to dinner. It was so cool outside that I didn’t sweat once. Perfect.
